Problems that foreign teachers may encounter before and after arriving in China

There are more and more foreign teachers doing English as a second language jobs in schools in China. Most of them are teaching oral English. Some teachers have a lot of teaching experience, so they can quickly adapt to a new working environment. Some teachers are professional subject teachers teaching mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.The purpose is to teach some professional knowledge of schools that students would like to study abroad. In my opinion, most of the schools in China hire foreign teachers to mainly teach oral English so that students can learn English better. But some international schools also need subject teachers. These teachers can not only teach oral English but also other subjects. But there is a problem. That is there are big differences between teaching english in China and teaching in their home countries.

First of all, from China’s national conditions. China is a populous country. It’s very common that there are 60 or 70 students in each class. However, in some European and American countries, the population is very small, so teachers just need to handle 10-20 students. So when they come to do English as a second language jobs in China, they can’t get used to the big class size. But this condition can not be changed in China. It’s a national condition. So teachers have t adapt to it.You can start from very active students to mobilize the active atmosphere of the whole class.

In addition, there is another problem that some foreign teachers recently graduated and seek English as a second language jobs in China. These foreign teachers are often young. They are lack of teaching experience and it’s not easy for them to start. So some schools will provide training during probation period. Teachers need to cooperate with the school positively to make themselves qualified. They may have their own ideas for teaching method, but the school knows what is the best way to teach their students and make them benefit a lot. So you need to follow the school’s pace. What’s more, junior high school and senior high school basically prohibit students from falling in love. If foreign teachers feel that students have this tendency to him, maybe your words and deeds give students this fantasy. So they need to improve their majesty,  and reduce the opportunity to be with the student as much as possible to avoid this phenomenon.

Another problem is that the level of oral English of Chinese students are poor. When schools use foreign teachers to teach them, they can’t understand the teacher at all. The spoken English of Chinese students is still in need of improvement. Foreign teachers just get contact with students. The students also need time to adapt to English teaching. Therefore, foreign teachers should try to use short and simple sentences during class and speak slowly. The purpose of foreign teachers is to create an English speaking environment students and help them to speak English and communicate with foreigners. Both of foreign teachers and students need time to adapt to each other. Foreign teachers also need to have confidence in their students.

There are also some problems that you need to face while in search for tefl jobs in China.

First, some teachers come to China for their “love”. that’s is to say, their girlfriend/boyfriend is in China. then the location of the partners matters a lot in their choice of tefl jobs. However, if they focus on a certain location, their salary will be limited. If the partner is in a big modern city, then there is no much difference in salary, but if he/she is in a rural area, then the salary there will be a large difference. And if the qualifications of the teacher can’t get a higher salary from the school, this problem will be more obvious.

Second is visa. Working visa is the only legal visa to do tefl jobs in China. But to get a working visa is not an easy thing. On one hand, foreign teachers need to have necessary documents such as a bachelor degree. However, not all the teachers have a degree. So this is a problem. On the other hand, even if foreign teachers have necessary documents, schools may not have the qualifications to hire foreign teachers. Even if both requirements are met, there may be another problem. Some schools are unwilling to extend the visa near the end of the contract, so they have to find another school. The time limit for transferring visa may affect the salary and package they can get.

Another point is the search for tefl jobs can be restricted by various factors, especially for race and education background. On one hand, schools are not looking for qualified teachers only, they are looking for white native teachers. So this makes non-native teachers and non-white raced teachers hard to find tefl jobs. On the other hand, some schools are looking for not only oral English teachers, but subject teachers like math, physics, etc. They will have higher demand for qualifications and experiences. So to get good tefl jobs in China is not as easy as before.
